Art and a Possible World
Amanda Beech will present a talk on the trajectory and motivations of her artistic practice, addressing key questions and problems that deal with Art as a site of thought and as an agent of social change. Speaking directly to the production of her artworks over the past few years, this talk will identify how artistic practice can re-think and move past some central bad mythologies of art and critique that we inherit and work within today. These include the perceived values of art as exception, failure, alterity, as well as art's claim to epistemological (self-reflexive) work.
In the face of the various limitations of artistic critique, we will ask how art produces the future, and how realism and reason can advance the constructive means to manifest a practice that meets this demand.

Amanda Beech is an artist and writer. Her work proposes a new realist politics of the artwork and its possibilities in the context of contingency and neo-rationalist conceptions of power. Recent exhibits include: Covenant Transport, Move or Die, Baltic Museum, UK, 2016-17, Propositions for A Stage: 24 Frames of a Beautiful Heaven, Lasalle Institute of Contemporary Art, Singapore, 2017 and Determinism Noir a comic strip for the journal Art Margins, 2018. She is contributing co-editor to the anthology Cold War Cold World, 2017 (Urbanomic) and is Dean of Critical Studies at California Institute of the Arts.

Amanda Beech intervient dans le cadre de Bleeding at the Edges, une série de masterclasses et séminaires organisée par Ida Soulard. Pour l'année 2017-2018, la ligne musicale est: Dans quels temps vivons-nous ? Qui sont le « contemporain », le « now », le « présent » ? Quelle est la texture des paysages sculptés par « notre temps » (qu’ils soient algorithmiques, soniques, technologiques, écologiques, géologiques, ou sociaux-politique) et comment les artistes s’y inscrivent et les transforment ? Ce séminaire fait partie du programme DUST (www.desertunit.org), un studio de recherche expérimental qui travaille à l’intersection des pratiques spatiales, de la théorie critique et de l’art contemporain. Ce programme est réalisé en partenariat avec l’école d’art de l’université de Houston, et est soutenu par Face Foundation / Partner University Fund.
