ANJA KARKKU-HOHTI - Paintings
Anja Karkku-Hohti has made a long career in art. She graduated from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 1959, after which she has performed in numerous group and solo exhibitions both in Finland and abroad.
"My works are gouaches. Gouache paints fascinate me especially because of the colour intensity, purity and brilliancy. They are light, nearly frivolous and at the same time heavy and melancholic. Clean, bright colours are as necessary to me as food. I can feel mentally and physically their energy and empowering effects. The topics of the works have been taken from the real, physical, mental and imaginary surroundings.
I think I'm a little object freak. I like the shapes, colors and especially the tales of objects. Even plain object makes visible, as well as its own but also the human history. The object has not only a functional but also a mysterious symbolic meaning. It tells of our common memories and experiences, and the combination creates again new stories.
I always wish that in my paintings not only figurative expression is present, but also a hint of slumber and day dreams together with beauty and sadness of the volatile moment.
In these works I'm not entering into everyday grievances, nor social problems. I hope that at least some of these works could bring the viewer experience of beauty and joy of heart, which in these times and at all times a person needs."
