De son vivant internationalement célébré, le Belge Frans Masereel (1889-1972) doit aujourd’hui être redécouvert. Son art est multiple, l’homme étant un humaniste engagé dans les luttes de son temps, la recherche d’un art de combat et la représentation d’un monde à pacifier. Il est depuis toujours reconnu pour ses gravures sur bois, indépendantes ou illustrant de nombreux livres, tels ceux de ses amis Stefan Zweigou Romain Rolland. La réédition régulière de quelques-unes de ses histoires en images sans paroles – il est le créateur du roman graphique sans texte dès 1918 – a contribué à ne pas totalement l’oublier.
Si Masereel possédait bien des planches d’imagerie d’Épinal, c’est surtout sa pratique de la traditionnelle gravure sur bois, destinée à un large public, qui a orienté ce choix. Cette exposition est aussi l’occasion de découvrir d’autres facettes de l’artiste qui a également dessiné, peint, travaillé pour la presse et l’édition, pour les arts décoratifs.
C’est donc à un artiste complet que le musée de l’Image ouvre ses portes du 14 février au 20 septembre 2026.
