About the Event

Geneva, as a global center for multilateral diplomacy and environmental governance, plays an essential role in addressing the interconnected triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity and land degradation, and pollution and waste confronting our planet. Building on the launch of the seventh edition of the Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-7) at the Seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), and in the lead-up to the inaugural session of the Plenary of the ISP-CWP as well as the plenaries of other science-policy platforms, this event will serve to raise awareness of science-policy processes and underscore their critical contribution to shaping informed international decision-making.
Science-Policy Interfaces (SPIs) are critical for translating scientific knowledge into effective and actionable policy. As the world confronts the triple planetary crisis—climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution—the demand for robust, interdisciplinary, and inclusive SPIs has never been more important.
In response to each of these interconnected crises, independent, international, and intergovernmental bodies have been established to support policymakers in making informed, science-based decisions, such as:

• For the climate change crisis — the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (or IPCC), established in 1988, with a secretariat in Geneva.
• For biodiversity loss crisis — the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (or IPBES), established in 2012, with a secretariat in Bonn.
• For the pollution crisis — the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution (or ISP-CWP), established in 2025.

These and other SPIs play an important role in support of global Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) negotiated and agreed upon by Member States to promote international cooperation, as well as the global deals that set agreed goals and targets to tackle the triple planetary crisis — Paris Agreement, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, Global Framework on Chemicals – For a Planet Free of Harm from Chemicals and Waste (GFC) — and the instruments for their implementation at the national level.
On the occasion of the inaugural session of the Plenary of the ISP-CWP, scheduled to take place in Geneva in February 2026, the Geneva Environment Network will host a Science-Policy Day. The event will take place in December 2025, after the launch of the seventh edition of the Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-7) at the Seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7).

Programme

Through lightning talks, fireside chats and an interactive fair, this Science-Policy Day will provide opportunities to engage and exchange with leading experts, stakeholders and Members States working in the interface of science and policy, fostering collaboration to advance solutions for today’s environmental challenges.

About the Interactive Science-Policy Fair

The International Environment House II will open its doors for the Interactive Science-Policy Fair, showcasing how international Geneva is translating knowledge into effective and actionable policy. In the face of the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, many actors in Geneva, as a global center for multilateral diplomacy and environmental governance, are actively working in the interstices of science and policy to address the planetary crisis.
Taking place in parallel to discussions, the Fair will showcase Geneva expertise through the work on environmental issues, chemical governance, health, human rights, trade and many relevant areas of work. The Fair aims to raise awareness of science-policy processes and their role in shaping informed international policy, with an emphasis on fostering collaboration and highlighting links and synergies among SPIs.
