“In souls nobly born, valour does not depend upon age”:a fitting adage for RaghebAlama who was only eight years old when he performed for the first time on Lebanese radio. Impressed by his singing and music abilities, his father had arranged the audition. Already the ‘super star’ of his school, the boy would nevertheless have to wait to finish his musical training before starting out on his professional career. His performance on the programme TV Studio El Phan in the early 80s got him quickly known, and his debut single ‘BokraBeyobromDolabik’ was the first of many hits. Famous throughout the Arab world, where his albums and concerts are hugely successful, RaghebAlamacombines the modern withthe traditionalboth in his music (which mixes Arab pop, traditional music, and techno and disco rhythms), and in his professional approach. The first Arab singer to produce a music video (for the song ‘Alby Ashq'ha’), he is very active on social networks (his Facebook and Twitter accounts have more than 4 million followers) and on television where he has been a judge on the Arab Idol talent show, and is now onthe judging panel for X Factor Middle East. An avid supporter of humanitarian and environmental causes, RaghebAlama is an accomplished artist whose albums and concerts are attracting an increasingly international audience. Especially since his successful collaboration with Shakira on ‘Good Stuff’in 2010.
