By Jürgen Ackermann,General Secretary of Airbus Safran Launchers, Member of the Air and Space Academy
The competitive context of space transportation became tougher with the arrival of new players a few years ago. The resulting price pressure required a major step for the European Launchers sector in order to remain a major player in such a market.
The planned evolution of Ariane 5 was not sufficient a step to keep pace. Only a new launcher named Ariane 6 together with a complete reform of the governance of the European launcher sector allowed cutting cost roughly by two. The presentation will give an overview of all major changes in many domains which are applied and implemented to master such a major challenge. Ariane 6 design and development is performed in a strongly industrially driven approach with methods stemming from other highly industrial sectors. Deep insight into a profound transformation of a complete industrial sector, one can name a revolution, shall be given with lively examples and insights.
