La « Camera Obscura », expression tirée du latin signifiant "Chambre Obscure", est l'ancêtre de l'appareil photographique moderne.
Il s’agit d’une boîte noire sur la paroi de laquelle on a fait un trou qui permet d’obtenir sur la paroi opposée une image renversée de la scène extérieure.
Déjà connu dans l'Antiquité à l'époque d'Aristote, environ 300 ans avant JC, ce principe fut décrit au Xème siècle, par le savant arabe Ibn al Haytam. Au 15e siècle, Léonard de Vinci expliqua le phénomène de manière rationnelle. Puis, au cours des 16e et 17e siècle, on a l’idée de remplacer le petit trou par une lentille pour améliorer le rendu de l’image, puis d’installer un miroir pour la redresser, et d’utiliser la camera obscura comme instrument de dessin.
Dispositf gratuit. Cependant, il faut s'acquitter du billet d'entrée du monument. Entrée gratuite pour les Arlésiens et pour les moins de 18 ans.
Horaires d’ouverture de chaque monument :
- Octobre, mars et avril : 9h-18h
- Novembre, décembre, janvier, février : 10h30 – 16h30
- Mai, juin, juilet, aout, septembre : 9h-19h
Dernière entrée 30 minutes avant la fermeture.
