La céramique, une matière vivante
En céramique, on décrit souvent un vase comme un corps humain : il a un col, une panse, des épaules ou un pied. Ce vocabulaire montre à quel point ces objets, façonnés à la main, sont proches du vivant.
À partir d’une matière très simple, la terre, la céramique répond à des besoins du quotidien depuis des millénaires. Mais elle est aussi sensible et expressive. Comme une peau, elle garde la trace de tout : la main qui la façonne, l’air de l’atelier, la composition de l’argile, la chaleur du four ou encore la force des flammes.
Entre geste, feu et culture
Peinte, gravée ou émaillée, elle a très tôt été décorée. Les couleurs, les craquelures, les coulures ou d’autres effets peuvent être recherchés, mais gardent toujours une part d’imprévu. Travailler la céramique demande donc à la fois du savoir-faire, de la précision, de l’expérience et une part d’intuition.
L’exposition rassemble 80 pièces venues de plusieurs continents, du IIIe millénaire avant notre ère à aujourd’hui, ainsi que plus de 40 artistes. Elle fait dialoguer des œuvres anciennes et contemporaines pour montrer la continuité des formes, la richesse de la matière et l’importance culturelle de la céramique. Des archives audio et vidéo complètent le parcours et plongent le public au plus près des artistes, des ateliers et des fours.
