En dressant le portrait de 3 DJ, Tama Sumo, Resom et Ena Lind, Sounds Queer pose la question de la différence du vécu des femmes DJ par rapport à leurs homologues masculins. Le documentaire offre un aperçu de l'environnement subjectif des personnages et leur relation conflictuelle avec le milieu, désormais dominé par les hommes hétérosexuels et blancs.
Les 3 DJs parlent de leur entrée dans la musique électronique et de l'impact que cela a eu sur leur vie: Tama Sumo a commencé à mixer à Berlin dans les années 1990 et est aujourd'hui une des résidentes du Berghain/Panoramabar, un club connu mondialement.
Resom a choisi de jouer entre Leipzig et Berlin pour diversifier sa carrière et parce qu'elle aimerait organiser des évènements avec ://about blank, un club géré par un collectif dans la tradition de la culture Techno-D.I.Y et qui vise à diffuser un discourt politique à gauche. Ena Lind est l'organisatrice des events feminist queer Bent Over qui ont lieu partout en Europe. Elle approche désormais son expérience de DJ de façon plus professionnel.
Le film lie les artistes à Berlin dans une perspective féministe, nerd, queer, d'amour de la musique et d'aspiration à s'accomplir en tant que DJ professionnel.le.

DAN BAHL
Dan Bahl est né à Freiburg/Breisgau, Allemagne, en 1982. Il est diplomé de l’université Humboldt en master de Cultural Studies et littérature Allemande. Le film Sounds Queer fait parti de sa thèse de master. Depuis 2014, il étudie à l’Université des arts de Berlin en Arts et Médias, et a choisit de se focaliser principalement sur le cinéma. Depuis 2002, il travaille aussi en tant que DJ.
En tant que mec trans* féministe, et DJ depuis 12 ans, Dan Bahl est intimement concerné par le sujet du film. En tant que personne qui le plus souvent a un passing féminin il a une connaissance approfondi des mécanismes sexistes que les femmes subissent encore en 2013. Ce contexte social constitue son approche au film, dans un désir de dépeindre les femmes comme fortes, sûres d’elles et féministes.

In portraying the three DJs Tama Sumo, Resom & Ena Lind „Sounds Queer“ considers the question whether female DJs gain diferent experiences than their male colleagues. The portraits give an insight into the subjective environment of the protagonists and their conflicts in this field still dominated by men.
The protagonists tell about their diferent paths to electronic music and its impact on their lives: Tama Sumo started Djing in Berlin in the 1990s and now holds a residency at
Berghain/Panoramabar, a club which is known all over the world. Resom moves from Leipzig to Berlin in order to further enhance her DJ-career and because she wants to organise events at ://about blank, a club run by a collective, which operates in the tradition of Techno-D.I.Y.-culture but also aims at transporting lef wing political ideas. Ena Lind is the organizer of the queer and feminist „Bend Over“-events, which take place all over Europe.
She now wants to approach her DJ-career more professionally. Captured by the camera, the movie draws a fascinating portrait not only of the three protagonists but also of Berlin, Feminism, Nerdity, queer life, the love for music, the aspiration for self-fulfilment and Djing as a profession.

DAN BAHL
Dan Bahl was born in Freiburg/Breisgau, Germany in 1982. He majored in Cultural Studies and in German Literature at Humboldt University Berlin (Magister Artum). The film „Sounds Queer“ is part of his Master's Thesis in Cultural Studies. Since 2014 he is studying “Arts and Media” at the University of the Arts in Berlin, choosing to set his main focus on film. Since 2002 Dan Bahl has also been working as a DJ focusing on electronic music. As a feminist transgender guy with female passing who has been Djing for twelve years, Dan Bahl has a very personal connection to the subject-matter of the movie „Sounds Queer“. As a
person who often passes as female, he has in-depth knowledge about sexist discrimination that women experience even in 2013. This social perspective constitutes his approach to the movie and also his desire to depict women as strong, self-confident and feminist.
