Abstract: We develop a theoretical model for couple mode choice relying on Stackelberg equilibrium concept. We then compare it to a cooperative model “a la Chiappory”, with an application to Paris region. We estimate the determinants of the leadership (spouses’ age, nationality, type of job contract, tenure status and number of children) and of the utility provided by a mode. To control for the endogeneity of the couple joint choice set, we finally model the joint choice of car ownership and mode choice. Values of time are computed for driving alone, commuting together by car as the driver and as the passenger, by gender. Finally, we discuss the public policy implications of our results.
